ABSTRACT

The effect of denture adhesive containing two different types of antimycotics [Nystatin and Miconazole] in treatment of denture stomatitis were evaluated and compared with the use of denture adhesive alone. Three groups of patients were evaluated, group one used denture adhesive containing Nystatin, group two used denture adhesive containing Miconazole, group three used denture adhesive alone [control group]. The patients were evaluated clinically and microbiologically at the beginning of the study, after one week, two weeks and four weeks. The results showed that the use of denture adhesive containing antimycotic is effective in inhibiting the candidal groups and improving the clinical condition of denture stomatitis patients

ABSTRACT

A study on chronic denture stomatitis was presented and two current methods of management were evaluated. The concept of use of hygenic regimen for dentures was discussed and proved to be helpful among 15 patients representing the control group. Bis-triazole, a new oral antifungal drug was used in the treatment of 15 patients suffering from denture sore mouth. Drug syrup used intra-orally under dentures was found to be effective in the treatment of denture stomatitis [50 mg on a divided dose of 5 mg/ml, 150 ml/bottle]; the daily dose for a fortnight was suggested as an adequate course of treatment. The achieved clinical improvement during the follow-up periods was proved to be statistically highly significant. For quantifying this improvement, st and ard subjective criteria were developed; namely, lesions, pain, duration and inflammation. C and ida albicans was isolated from all cases of denture sore mouth [30 patients]. Although mycological assessment showed a high rate of negativism at the 7th day of therapy, recolonization was observed in 2 patients at the end of 14th day of therapy, giving a satisfactory mycological cure. The drug therapy did not induce changes in blood picture as well as renal and liver function tests. The drug was well tolerated in almost all cases, mild and transient nausea and diarrhea were reported in only one patient. Finally, the disorders which may result from a persistent oral infection by C and ida should be considered the main target of management and underline the necessity for adequate treatment of this disease entity

ABSTRACT

For twelve completely edentulous patients, a conventional dentures, dentures lined with soft liner and an occlusal reactive dentures were made. The muscle activity of superficial masseter and anterior temporalis was recorded during maximum clenching and chewing of soft, hard and fibrous food after wearing the dentures for a certain period. The results indicated that the dentures lined with soft liners was the most reliable types as regards muscle activity, masticatory efficiency and patient's acceptance

ABSTRACT

Twenty male patients having two m and ibular canines were selected and an overdenture, an interim tooth-attached denture and a complete denture were constructed for each patient in this study. Clinical measurements of the activity of masticatory muscles, bite force strength and chewing efficiency were performed immediately at the time of denture insertion and six months after wearing the tested dentures. Comparing the results of the three types of the tested dentures indicated that there were increases in masticatory performance after six months of wearing the different dentures. The highest value of masticatory performance was in the overdenture and the lowest value was in the conventional complete dentures and interim tooth attached denture had intermediate value

ABSTRACT

A clinical study was carried out to compare between the effect of interim tooth-attached denture and overdenture on the two m and ibular canines concerning their periodontium. Twenty male patients having two m and ibular canines were selected for this study. For each patient interim denture and overdenture were constructed. All clinical measurements were performed at the time of denture insertion and six months after wearing the denture. The results showed that the tooth mobility, depth of pocket, gingival crevicular fluid and the resorption of alveolar bone crest mesial and distal to the abutments were significantly increased after six months of wearing interim denture and markedly decreased after wearing the overdenture for the same period of time

ABSTRACT

One of the causes of occlusal disharmony in the finished denture is distortion of the interocclusal recording material. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of base plate wax, plaster of Paris, zinc oxide-eugenol paste and silicone as interocclusal recording materials. The results showed that no measurable changes took place when plaster of Paris was used as an interocclusal recording material. In case of zinc oxide-eugenol paste, very slight dimensional change took place immediately after recording of jaw relationship and no further change occurred after that. Small and gradual change was recorded when silicone was tested. Base plate showed the greatest dimensional changes

ABSTRACT

Complete dentures were constructed for nine completely edentulous patients. The fitting surface of each denture was replaced twice by a semipermanent soft liner and a tissue conditioner. After one week of insertion, the dentures were immersed in 4% methylene blue for 15 minutes to disclose the plaque accumulated on the fitting surface. A planimeter was used to measure the surface area of the stained plaque. The results showed that lower dentures had greater tendency to plaque accumulation than upper dentures. The tissue conditioner enhanced plaque accumulation. The intended permanent soft liner had no significant effect on the amount of accumulated plaque. It could be concluded that more hygiene is required when a tissue conditioner is used for relining complete denture, especially the lower one

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to study the effect of vacuum treatment of tissue conditioners on porosity, water sorption and resiliency of the material. The results showed that vacuum treatment reduced the number of voids in Visco-Gel. The reduction in voids resulted in less water sorption and increased resiliency. It could be concluded that vacuum treatment improves the properties of Visco-Gel. It also minimizes the possibility of colonization and proliferation of microorganisms
